The development of the first fuel cell is credited to Sir William Grove in 1842. Grove was a British patent attorney who was also a scientist studying the principles of conservation of energy. His studies showed that reverse electrolysis is possible. Fuel cells finally became acclaimed as an energy source in the 1960’s when NASA developed them for the space program. The breakthrough technology that allowed NASA to use PEM fuel cells was a substance called Nafion® which was developed by Dupont® and is similar to Teflon®. Scientists today work to improve the materials used in fuel cells.
